There is a strong South Yorkshire representation in the Yorkshire team to contest the Inter Counties Championships at Bedford tomorrow and Sunday.

The event is incorporated into the English Championships, a lower key event than its title suggests, particularly in Olympic year. New rules mean that the Counties can only select from those already entered for the English Championships which has not made for an easy life for the team manager. Yorkshire defend their women’s title and include pole vaulter Abigail Roberts (City of Sheffield & Dearne) who was runner up last year. Other Sheffield athletes in the team are Abigail Bishell (100 m), Karla Drew and Georgia Hollis-Lawrence (100 hurdles) and Natalie Myers (3000 walk).

Hallamshire’s Nicola Squires does the 3000m steeplechase whilst the 400m spot goes to Abbey Stanley (Rotherham).

Sheffield-based Louise Bloor (Trafford) won the 100m last year but is preparing with the relay squad for the Olympics.

In the men’s, UK champ (Daniel Gardiner (Sheffield) looks for another long jump title whilst his team mate Jack Houghton should do well in the 400 hurdles. Nicolas Cole and George Heppinstall may be Sheffield’s third and fourth choice pole vaulters but they should do well; Heppinstall was bronze medallist last year.

In the 100m Yorkshire are represented by Sheffield pair Ben Shields and Jerome McIntosh with McIntosh also doing the 200 metres.
