Bankers face battle to beat the drop
A SEASON that promised much is fast turning sour for Sheffield University Bankers.
They suffered a 2-1 defeat in their must-win clash at Formby and now face a battle to maintain their National League status.
Bankers went into the match five points clear of their rivals, knowing that victory would almost certainly condemn Formby to a play-off position come the end of the season.
Unfortunately such an outcome didn't materialise even though the Goodwin side was first to break the deadlock when Scot Sanderson's lofted shot was converted by Nick Fletcher for his fourth goal in four games.
Frustration then became the name of the game as Dave Moore was yellow-carded and a Formby short corner routine was stopped on the line by Andrew Sidebottom's head and the resultant penalty stroke was slotted home.
With 11 minutes left, Bankers fell behind when they failed to react to a quick short corner and shortly after Josh Poke received the game's second yellow
Three games remain in what will definitely be a real test of character for the Sheffield side. First up are Belper who fired home 11 goals in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, followed by Doncaster out to gain revenge for their defeat at Goodwin and finally, high flying Durham visit on the last day of the season.
All to do indeed!
Mixed results for the second team who lost 4-3 to Chester and then drew 4-4 with 10-man York 24 hours later. York had a player red carded for punching Dave Moore after a strong tackle but Bankers only managed to snatch a point in the closing minutes of the game. This weekend they face a tricky away double-header against Manchester and Leeds.
