The return of American point guard BJ Holmes will provide the Sharks with a new dimension, says captain Mike Tuck.

Holmes will make his first start this season on Friday against Durham Wildcats at the English Institute of Sport after re-joining the club last week.

Tuck said: “I’m definitely pleased to see BJ back at the Sharks.

“He’s an experienced guard who knows a lot of our players and the system already from last season.

“What BJ gives us is someone who is a true point guard - someone who can allow the other guys to play their more natural positions.”

The Sharks originally couldn’t agree a deal with Texas-based Holmes and signed Brian Barbour instead.

However, Barbour left Sheffield without playing a competitive match for the club because of family reasons and so Holmes - who was still available- was brought back in.

“Jeremie Simmons and Nick Lewis have been taking care of point guard duties and doing a great job,” said Tuck.

“But they’re more suited to the off guard position with a lot of their shots coming from people finding them with space when they’re open.

“At the moment they’re having to bring the ball up the floor so it just helps them get back to their best positions.”

Lewis will be missing for the Durham match after he was suspended for one game following his ejection in the victory at Birmingham Knights on October 12.

When he returns he’ll once again form a good partnership with Holmes.

However, Tuck says the frontcourt of himself, Patrick Horstmann and Da’Quan Cook will also benefit from having Holmes back in a Sharks vest.

“Patrick was saying loves BJ’s style of play,” said Tuck.

“It allows us to space the floor better which gives more room for the big guys. We’ve had a couple of weeks without a game so it’s been a good time for BJ to come back in.”

A Sharks victory will see them gain ground on top two Newcastle Eagles and Worcester Wolves who play each other on Friday.
