Sharks suffered a heart-breaking defeat last night at the EIS as Worcester Wolves last season basket handed the visitors victory.
The match seemed destined for overtime but Chavis Holmes collected a rebound from Jamal Williams miss and scored off the backboard with 0.9 seconds remaining.
Sharks had one last chance to snatch a win but Nick Lewis’s three-point shot on the final buzzer narrowly missed to leave the in-form Wolves celebrating.
It is another disappointing result for Sheffield, who have now lost three in a row and are well-behind in the title race.
However, with new signing John Barber making his debut the Sharks began well.
A 15-0 run through the middle of the first quarter handed them a 26-12 lead after ten minutes.
Worcester responded in the second period with the impressive Alex Owumi to the fore. Wolves finished the half with a 9-2 burst to lead 41-40 at the interval.
The Wolves lead ballooned to 67-57 before a Lewis two was the final score of the third quarter and an 11-0 run to start the fourth tied the match at 70-70.
Neither side could make their free throws count in the final minutes – the Sharks in particular struggled again from the line – before Wolves crucial basket.
