Better spirit in Sheffield Steelers dressing room

Neil Abel believes there is more character and less selfishness in this season’s Sheffield Steelers’ line-up.

“There are no ‘I am’ people here like last year” said Abel, a reference to the high turnover at the club.

“There were two or three of them last year - I just ignored them” admitted the Steelers mainstay, who aids coach Gerad Adams in marshalling the defence.

One example of the selflessness is skipper Jonathan Phillips - who is likely to captain the side this weekend aginst Fife, away and home, 14 days after an appendix op.

“Cullen Eddy and Darryl Hay have been great additions, I think we have upgraded on Drew Fata and Chad Langlais” continued Abel. “Our ‘D’ loves to jump into the (offensive) play - in fact it can be a cavalry charge at times!

“Frank Doyle had a great season in goal last year - but now I think you will see some exceptional form from him.”

Abel doesn’t think Steelers will have a problem at Fife Flyers’ Kirkcaldy ring this evening.

Cardiff’s rink is a bit of a hole, they will relish Fife’s big ice.”
