KELL Brook knows he has a challenge to get mentally focused on a new date to win the world title.

Sheffield’s IBF weltherweight challenger said he was “absolutely gutted” to discover that bicep-injury victim Devon Alexander had pulled out of their planned February 23 contest in Detroit.

Brook said: “I’m still confident I can keep my head right and do the job, because I’m a professional.”

The main issue facing the unbeaten 26 year old is getting his head round a new timetable of training and preparation.

The effect is not just felt by him and his team, but also his partner, Lindsey, and child Nevaeh, of whom he has seen little in recent weeks.

Brook has been on two fortnightly warm-weather camps in the Canary Isles and, even when he was at home, he was living at Hellaby Hall Hotel, rather than home in Grenoside, so his nutrition could be monitored.

It’s been a sacrifice for Brook’s whole family - and now they are all going to have to go through the emotional wringer all over again.

Before the postponement, Brook told me: “I will have been away from my family for weeks by the time this is done, but it’s something I’ve got to do. I’m in the best possible condition because of this and she (Lindsey) understands.

“It’s because she knows why I am doing this that she is so supportive. Everybody is behind me 100%. I have great people behind me at home and in the team.”

One good thing to come out of the delay is that Brook may now be able to spend the day with Nevaeh on her first birthday on February 15. Originally, that would have been a difficult day for Brook, as the pair would have been parted, as they had been on New Year’s Eve. Now Brook can at least be there on her milestone day.

Did you know? Gary Madine, Kell Brook’s footballing friend, was among the first to sympathise with the fighter. He tweeted: “@SpecialKBrook chin up fella time will come.”
