It was Wednesday of this week when a happy Kell Brook went on twitter from his Tenerife holiday resort.
“We’re bringing big-time boxing to Sheffield. You’re going to get exited with this December 6 show. Doesn’t get much better!”
Brook was taking a well-earned rest after taking Shawn Porter’s IBF world title.
After 20 years of toil, he’d reached the summit and millions of pounds in future earnings lay ahead.
But within a few short hours Brook was lying in hospital, a knife wound to his leg, having “lost a lot of blood”.
Immediately fellow boxers went on twitter offering best wishes including Porter: “Just heard what happened. Horrible! Feel better soon.”
Luke Campbell: “Terrible news. I hope he’s ok.” David Price and Adil Nawar wished him a “quick recovery.”
Ryan Rhodes: “Let’s hope it’s not serious.” Tony Bellew: “What is it coming to when people just walk around with knives?” Antony Fowler: “Great fighter there are some jealous, horrible people out there.”
Dave Coldwell: “Hope Kell is back in the ring defending his world title soon.”
The details of exactly what happened are yet to emerge.
His family will be the first to know.
But promoter Eddie Hearn won’t be far behind. In the ruthless world of sport-business, millions of pounds rest on Brook’s full recovery.
The Star wishes him well.
