A CAREER-best performance from Navid Mansouri will allow the Rotherham boxer to move up to the next level.

Light-middleweight Mansouri came on strong to see off dangerous former British title challenger Max Maxwell at Magna.

There was a worrying fifth round when it appeared Mansouri had brought the proverbial knife to a gun fight with the heavier-hitting Jamaican, but Mansouri got through it to claim a 79-75 decision. The 26-year-old, now trained by Oliver Harrison, produced a classy display from the midway point to turn the fight in his favour.

By the final bell nobody wanted the fight to end and promoter Dave Coldwell is looking to step him up again.

“We’re looking for Erick Ochieng soon, maybe even Nav’s next fight because he’s definitely at English title level now,” said Coldwell.

Kenyan-born Ochieng faces Terry Carruthers, who beat Mansouri in Prizefighter, in his fourth English title defence next month.

Chad Gaynor, also boxing in his home town proved his credentials too. Cheered on by sparring partner Kell Brook, welterweight Gaynor beat solid Nicaraguan Santos Medrano on points.

Gaynor won just about every round, one was shared, and his attacks became more telling as the fight wore on.

Rotherham light-welter Atif Shafiq was involved in a tasty affair against crafty East Ham veteran Johnny Greaves.

The best shot Greaves threw in the opener was with his elbow and he rightly lost a point for doing so.

After that, Shafiq toyed with the older man using a mixture of rapid hands and niftier footwork to take it 40-35 on the scorecard.

Heavyweight Kash Ali is now three unbeaten after seeing off unorthodox Ugandan Moses Matovu 40-37.

Doncaster’s Jamie Hughes also got his third win on the bill. The light-heavyweight saw off Pole Pawel Trebinski on points.
