McDonnell, making the first defence of his Commonwealth bantamweight title against the durable Kenyan, made it nine wins in a row.

Otieno made an impressive start and looked to land a knockout in the early rounds, with some smart combinations.

But McDonnell outshone and dominated behind his jab.

His best round came in the fifth when he opened up the Kenyan with a body shot and had the challenger on the back foot with a series of blows.

The champ continued to gain points in the later rounds, with his on target jabs and straight rights as he looked set to finish the fight.

He looked determined in his mission to become the first to stop Otieno inside the distance, but it wasn’t to be.

McDonnell out-worked his opponent and the judges scored his victory 120-108 twice and 118-111.
