Richard Towers, left, takes on Lucas Browne in an eliminator for the Commonwealth heavyweight title in Hull tonight.

Giant boxer Richard Towers can cut it with the very best in the heavyweight division.

That is the opinion of Sheffield welterweight Kell Brook, who stretched his unbeaten run to 31 fights after stopping Vyacheslav Senchenko in the fourth round of last Saturday’s world title eliminator at the Motorpoint Arena.

Standing at 6ft 8intall, Towers returns to the ring for the first time in 16 months tonight when he faces Australia’s Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne in an eliminator for the Commonwealth title in Hull.

Although Towers has been out of action due to promotional problems and planned fights abroad falling through, Brook has predicted that his stablemate will come out on top against Browne to set up a date with British and Commonwealth champ David Price.

“Richard is tall, can punch hard and if he carries on listening then he can definitely go very far,” Brook told The Star. “He’s had some bad times and been to prison but he has completely turned his life around.

“He has been sparring with Anthony Joshua and trained really hard for this fight.

“His opponent [Browne] is very tough and has not been beaten. His best win to date was against James Toney, who is an absolute legend so he means business but I believe that Richard will come up with the goods.

“I can see in his eyes that he’s going to do us proud.”

Matt Clark, Browne’s manager, is refusing to underestimate the threat Towers will pose.

“We don’t want to overlook this fight and we’re giving Richard Towers the utmost respect,” Clark said.

“Towers is 6ft 8ins tall, he can crack, I think he’s got 11 knockouts from 14 wins and he’s fought some decent guys. He’s also quite tricky with that Ingle style.

“The Ingles have a list of champion a mile long and they do fight in a similar style. They can be quite awkward and Lucas could find it quite difficult until he closes the gap and when does it could be the end of the show.”
