Kell Brook’s injury has brought an unexpected opportunity to fellow Brit boxer Lee Purdy.
The Colchester man, who only two years ago was beaten in a British welterweight title fight, has taken the Sheffielder’s place against American Devon Alexander in New Jersey on May 18, in an IBF world title contest.
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who manages both Brook and Purdy, has been assured by the IBF that the frustrated Grenoside fighter will be next in line to face the winner, although Alexander is far from sure whether the fight will ever go ahead.
“If the fight will Kell Brook happens, it happens,” he said. “But if it doesn’t, then I am not going to lose any sleep over it. Purdy is next and I am focused on him.”
