The big-punching middleweight has been hit by an unfortunate series of injuries which have restricted him to one outing this year, a modest victory in March.

Etches is still receiving some treatment to a hand complaint, but expects the all-clear to begin campaigning soon.

“Some fluid needed draining from my hand because of a cyst which appeared because of over-use” explained Sheffield’s Birley Bomber.

“It is the reason I have not been active for so long.

“It has been a frustrating year and it will be a fairly rubbish Christmas - but that will because I will be preparing to come back either in February or March.”

Etches, whose CV stands at Won 20 Lost One, says a New Year title fight is on the horizon.

“Hopefully the details will be confirmed next week. I know that I have got what it takes to succeed and now, after all the injuries, I can set about putting it into practice.

“My last fight was a good performance (a fourth-round TKO over Hungarian Zoltan Sera) although the kid I was up against was nothing sparkling.

“My next fight will make people take note.”

Etches - who turns 26 in January - has been under the radar recently as he makes his recovery and while some in the city boxing fraternity question the quality of his previous opponents, he has undisputed punching power and the local scene will be better for his return.
