Sheffield boxer sporting in defeat

He lost his unbeaten record to Scotsman Tommy Philbin in Edinburgh last weekend. The Sheffielder was stopped in the fourth round. He is now W4 L1, while Philbin has an eight fight winning sheet.

Dutton posted on social media: “The only man to have beat me: Tommy Philbin. A tough lad that can bang. We had a really good scrap and I dare say either one of us was close to getting caught with a big shot, it just so happened that I was the unfortunate one that copped for it first.

“Hats off to Tommy and I wish him all the best for the future and his career.

“Look out for him as he’ll be mixing it with the top flight very soon. My first loss but won’t make a difference to my mental state. I wanted a good opponent and I got one. Onwards and upwards.”

Lewis Taylor has also suffered a loss recently.

The Dronfield middleweight was beaten on points in an eight-fight contest with home fighter Luke Keeler in Dublin. Taylor felt he didn’t deserve to lose.

The next big fight in Sheffield is Sam Sheedy’s assault on the Commonwealth middleweight title, at Ponds Forge, against Nigerian Abolaji Rasheed on March 24.

Also scheduled to be on the bill are: Super Flyweight Tommy Frank, Cruiserweight Joss Paul, Bantamweight Loua Nassa, Flyweight Kyle Yousaf, Super Welterweight Nicki Smedley, Light Heavyweight Scott Westgarth, Featherweight Muheeb Fazeldin, Super Featherweight Razaq Najib and Super Middleweight Nicolie Campbell.

The following night, Rossington’s Maxi Hughes contests the British and WBC International super featherweight titles with Martin Joseph Ward at the Manchester Arena.

That scrap is on the undercard of Jorge Linares v Anthony Crolla.

Sheffield’s Ryan Hardy takes on Cassius Connor, at Super Welterweight, at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace, London, on April 1.

Dinnington cruiserweight Darren Snow takes on debutant Ryan Charles on the same show and Rotherham welter Nathan Hardy boxes O’Shane Clarke.

Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn, the promoter, says he is delaying confirmation of Kell Brook v Errol Spence Jr, planned for Bramall Lane on May 27, until “we have licensing and approval in place from Sheffield Council.”
