STEP aside, London and Manchester. Sheffield is the new home of British boxing.

Hundreds of fight fans and shoppers mingled at Meadowhall yesterday to hear Sky TV announcer John McDonald declare that “it was no coincidence” the sports broadcaster continued to chose the South Yorkshire hotspot for big boxing shows.

More than 6,000 tickets have been sold for local lad Kell Brook’s IBF world title eliminator with Argentinian Hector Saldivia tonight.

Both fighters came inside the welterweight limit at yesterday’s weigh-in at the shopping mall.

There were that many cameras and security guards in Lower High Street for the event that passers-by must have thought President Obama was visiting.

Brook looked in a better physical shape than I have ever seen him before. And bookies make him a massive favourite to triumph.
