Sam Sheedy’s confidence is sky high with a week to go before English light middleweight title ‘derby’ clash with Nav Mansouri.

Punishing training sessions with Jez Wilson and Lewis Taylor - and a new conditioning regime involving Hallam University sports scientists - has seen the Sheffield fighter become fitter than ever.

Rotherham’s Mansouri has had some exceptional sparring of his own at his training base in Manchester.

But Sheedy’s trainer Glyn Rhodes believes his man is now ready to seize the title off Mansouri, at the Magna Centre a week tonight.

“Jez is always a handful to spar with, he comes to put it on you” said Rhodes.

“And Lewis Taylor is a big and powerful middleweight. But Sam did really well and his confidence has gone through the roof. I thought he was the underdog, at first, but now I genuinely think he has come of age. He was always the younger one coming through in our gym, but now his time has come.”

Taylor, from Dronfield, fights for the vacant English middleweight title against Grant Cunningham on the same Magna bill. If he wins, Rhodes will be pursuing a match-up with Wilson. “It would be a great fight for Sheffield” he said.
