Kell Brook may have to wait his place in the boxing queue before finding out whether he has a Bramall Lane or Sheffield Arena arrangement to fight Jessie Vargas.
A variety of dates and venues have been thrown around for the IBF/WBO welterweight fight, but one fact remains certain, Brook has yet to sign a contract for a fight in which his opponent is said to be earning $1.7m.
Initially August looked a good bet for a show on Sheffield United’s pitch. Then September. Now October is being mooted...when, ofcourse, the weather may be even more variable than it is during the Summer months.
Promoter Eddie Hearn says he is having to factor in a possible duel at middleweight between multi-belt champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Chris Eubank Jr.
Hearn wants the two events to be a month apart - because both contests would likely be Pay-Per-View...and many boxing fans would want at least four weeks before shelling out.
Hearn was quoted on boxingscene.com as saying: “There’s still a bit of a way to go but I’m confident everyone wants to make it happen. Let’s see if [Golovkin and Eubank] put pen to paper. There’s also Brook/Vargas and we are trying to marry the two together. I’m hoping the pair could be a month apart.
“Brook was going to be September 10 but there have been a few negotiations to overcome on that so that fight may be early October, or we could go September with it if Golovkin isn’t September,” Hearn added.
An October fight wouldn’t be great news for the Sheffielder or American, both of whom have been pacing their training towards a late August, early September scrap.
Brook last boxed in March, an easy win over Canadian Kevin Bizier.
Other Brits have been busier, Anthony Joshua and Anthony Ogogo have both boxed twice since then. Eubank boxed Tom Doran on June 25 and is now being touted for an early return with GGG.
However Hearn remains optimistic, tweeting: “I’m working hard..it will be worth the wait.”
Meanwhile Vargas’s mind is drifting towards Timonth Bradley, who outpointed him last June in California.
While Keith Thurman is saying he’d fancy taking on Brook at some time in the future.
However Brook is committed to knocking Vargas “clean out.”
