SHEFFIELD welterweight Kell Brook won the first round in a war of words when he faced Manchester’s Matthew Hatton at the press conference ahead of their War Of The Roses showdown and said: “He’s going to get smashed.”

But Hatton took it on the chin and laughed back: “I never knew that.” Then added:”We might as well go home now.”

The top two ranked welterweights in Britain will clash for the WBA Inter-Continental and IBF International Welterweight titles on Saturday night at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.

Almost 10,000 tickets have already been sold and the event will be screened live on Sky Sports.

But the fighters squared up first at the press conference backstage at the Arena this afternoon

Brook said: “I know Matthew is going to have trained very hard, like myself. But he knows he’s going to get smashed on Saturday night. There’s no doubt about it.

“They’ve already had a Hatton champion - it’s now the Brook family turn to make their legacy. I’ve done this since I was nine-years-old and there’s no way on earth I’m going to lose Saturday night. He’s getting it. There’s no doubt about it.”

Hatton said: “Training camp has gone better than ever for this fight. I’m in the best shape I’ve been in. That really is the case. I’m 10 per cent focussed and everything has gone great.

“The work is done now and I’m just excited to get in the ring on Saturday. I was confident on the day this fight was announced. But I’m even more donfide4nt now. My preparation has been absolutely fantastic. I’ve got everything to gain going into this fight. There’s no doubt in my mind whatsoever.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn said: “Some people don’t believe we’ve sold so many tickets - but we’ll have around 10,,00 in the Arena. Every ticket is sold out apart from a few at £1000 and some £30 tiers up at the back. We are over the moon. If we stop selling tickets now we’ll have over 9,50 in there. It’s going to be an electric night.”
