Top seed Nick Matthew booked his place in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event in the Commonwealth Games after beating Alan Clyne in straight games.
The defending champion from Sheffield defeated Scotland’s number one 11-4 11-5 11-8. Matthew, who will return to action tomorrow, was handed a colourful placard, with the message ‘Happy Birthday Nick’ scrawled on it, by a little girl in the Glasgow crowd afterwards to mark his 34th birthday.
Sheffield swimmer Nick Grainger, meanwhile, won through to the Commonwealth Games men’s 200m Freestyle Final after a swim off..
However, Grainger would go on to finish last with a time of 1:49.69, with Australian Cameron McEvoy finishing behind fellow countryman Thomas Fraser-Holmes for gold.
Wales’ Calum Jarvis took bronze.
Earlier, Grainger, Canada’s Ryan Cochrane and Ieuan Lloyd of Wales finished in joint-eighth place with the same time of 1:48.98 with the Englishman winning the swim-offLewis Coleman, also of Sheffield, finished sixth in heat 5 with a time of 01:51In the men’s 400m Individual Medley, another Steel City man, Max Litchfield finished sixth in his heat in 04:25.10.
