Comprehensive win as Hatters maul Topcats

The countdown to the National Cup Final at the end of the month continues for City of Sheffield Hatters in their 50th Anniversary year.

It was a comfortable introduction to the New Year as the Hatters eased their way to a comfortable 95-37 National League Division One victory at Brixton Topcats.

Katie Crowley’s charges led by just 22-15 at the end of the first quarter but then took control five minutes into the second period as they pulled away to lead 49-21 at the break.

They increased this to 76-29 at the three-quarter mark and closed out in comprehensive style.

Top scorers: Sarah Naylor 20, Steph Gandy 15 and Naomi Campbell 12.

There was a ton-up on-the-road tonic for the second team as they demolished Ilkeston Outlaws 102-30 in their National League Division 2 North clash.

Hatters stormed into a match-winning 25-4 first quarter lead and extended it to 50-14 at the break. All of the squad contributed to the scoring, with Dana Kima and Kelly Simcox showing great improvement to finish with 14 and 12 points respectively. Taylor led the way with 22 points and Clayton netted 14.

The Under-16s fell to a shock 71-60 defeat at home to National League North rivals Stockport Lapwings. Hatters built up a 33-21 advantage at half time but the visitors won the third quarter 31-13 to take a six point lead into the final ten minutes. Stocksport increased it further to run out comfortable winners.

They face a vital double header weekend with a National Cup semi-final at Manchester on Saturday followed by a vital league game in Cheshire 24 hours later.

A storming final quarter earned Hatters a 51-42 success over Kirklees in their Leeds & District League encounter. There was never more than four points in it right through to the end of the third session when the teams were locked 36-36.
