Council helps women’s team

Sheffield is not only the City of Sport but a City with a Heart.

Sheffield is not only the City of Sport but a City with a Heart.

The City Council has drawn up an action plan to help ease the problems facing the Great Britain women’s volleyball team which centre around a total cut in funding and the loss of their ‘home’ base at the English Institute of Sport in the countdown to the London Olympics.

Training facilities and court time have been made available five mornings a week at the SIV-run EIS and in the afternoons at the All Saints Sports Centre.

Other Sheffield partners have also come on board - Sheffield Hallam University has helped out with accomodation and physiotherapy and a number of hotels have opened up rooms to players.

The GB team switches its attention to a two-week tour of Peru and Argentina while ‘spiker’ Rachel is close to full fitness after an operation on her shoulder. On their return they face Alergia in a double-header at Ponds Forge on Friday, June 3 (4pm) and Saturday (1.30pm).
