SHEFFIELD and Yorkshire batsman Joe Root has risen to prominence because he possesses a cool head on young shoulders, according to former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Root, on debut, hit an impressive 73 in the final test of England’s historic series win in India at the end of 2012.

Now the 22-year-old is looking to shine in the Twenty20, ODI and five-day arenas in this month’s tour of New Zealand. Vaughan believes Root is capable of captaining his country in the future.

‘I knew Joe was good but I didn’t realise he was that good,” said Vaughan, who played with Root’s father Matt at Sheffield Collegiate. “It’s his temperament that sets him apart. He just doesn’t fear the big stage. That’s the key to being an England player.”
