Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie insists there is still room for improvement, despite the champions’ remarkable three-day win over Durham at Scarborough.

The Tykes, bowled out for 162 in their first innings, then dismissed Durham for 156 to gain an unlikely lead, before hundreds from Glenn Maxwell and Adil Rashid put them firmly in control.

And 4-61 in the second innings from England bowler Liam Plunkett saw Durham all out for 263, handing Yorkshire their sixth consecutive victory in the County Championship by 183 runs.

They now look odds-on to retain their Division One crown, but Gillespie warned: “I am conscious that there is still room for improvement and our top five need to step up and get the job done with the bat.

“It would be very nice to say that we are the Champions again but until the last ball has been bowled you cannot get too far ahead.”

Gillespie added: “This win is a massive boost for us. To be stood here talking about our win, early in the evening of Day 3, after being 79 for five only yesterday, is beyond belief.

“It was a brilliant counter-attacking partnership between Glenn Maxwell and Adil Rashid that got us going and then our work in the field was top notch.

“I am still shaking a bit, it was very exciting.

“Liam Plunkett bowled very quickly today and you will not see anything faster than that in county cricket.

“He was fast and, at times, nasty, while Adil once again hoovered up towards the end.”

Meanwhile, Plunkett has been named in a 14-man squad for the fifth Ashes Test at the Oval, which begins on August 20.

Yorkshire opener Adam Lyth keeps his place, while Jonny Bairstow, Rashid and Joe Root make up the Tykes contingent.

Jimmy Anderson, who missed the victory at Trent Bridge due to a side injury, is also in the squad but national selector James Whitaker insisted: “We will not take any chances with him.”
