Dawson can’t wait to be back playing

Red all over: Stephen Dawson in action for Leyton Orient

STEPHEN Dawson wants to prove to the Barnsley supporters just why boss Keith Hill snapped him up just before the transfer window slammed shut.

The former Leyton Orient skipper won many admirers for some fine performances in the lower leagues.

But the Dublin-born midfielder believes now is the time for him to develop even more under the guidance of Hill and assistant manager David Flitcroft, with a Championship debut just around the corner.

“I’m really looking forward to it, it’s a great challenge for me,” said Dawson.

“I knew Keith from playing against him when he was manager of Rochdale and I was playing at Bury. I know how he works and he knows what makes me tick.

“As soon as I came up here [to Barnsley] and saw the stadium I knew that it was a dream come true.

“I’ve known Keith and Flicker for the best part of five years, so I’d like to think that they know what I’m about.

“What I will do is bring non-stop energy to the team, up and down the pitch for 90 minutes. I’ll never give up.

“I’m sure coming here, working under the manager and the players will improve me as a player. I don’t like losing, that’s for sure. I’m sure everyone’s the same.”

Dawson has yet to play his first game for the Reds with an ankle injury having sidelined him.

But the 26-year-old is approaching full fitness and, although Saturday’s home clash with Birmingham City might prove too soon, Dawson is ready and waiting to make his Barnsley bow.

“It’s been a bit frustrating at the minute because I’ve been out the last month,” admitted Dawson. “Bit it’s just a great club to be at the minute. It’s on the up and everything’s done right, on and off the pitch. It’s a challenge I can’t wait to get stuck into.

“A lot of fans won’t know a lot about me, but through hard work and determination I believe you set your own standards.”
