What better way to celebrate your 50th anniversary than with a League and Cup double.
Health365 Hatters duly obliged as they retained their Women’s National Division One title with an 81-67 victory at main rivals Nottingham Wildcats.
It was always going to be Hatters’ day as they opened up a 25-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to 45-29 at half time. By the time the teams went into the final session, Katie Crowley and Co. had a match-winning 67-45 advantage and although the home side reduced the gap to 14, the points and the title glory were Sheffield-bound.
Stephanie Gandy topped the scoring chart with 26 points while fellow American Kisha Lee and Helen Naylor each netted 15. There was little time for the Hatters to celebrate as they faced second from bottom Barking Abbey Leopards at All Saints 24 hours later.
While never under real threat, the newly crowned champions never got into full flow until the final quarter when they helped themselves to an amazing 36 points, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Sarah Naylor, to seal a 95-55 victory. Naylor top-scored with 23 points with Gandy and Lee firing 18 and 17 respectively.
Hatters head into the final weekend of league games with a double-header against Team Northumbria and Brixton Topcats at All Saints.
Then they turn their attention to the Play Off Championship ... and a clean sweep.
