Double honour for Sheffield table tennis star Horsfield

It’s all happening for Stocksbridge Rugby’s Stephen Horsfied, who was a beaten finalist in the European Veterans Championship in Finland last week and this weekend makes his England Over-40s debut.

He, Abbeydale’s Shaun Bibby and Bill Grant (Stocksbridge) were among 2,500 competitors in the European Veteran’s championships.

The seven-time Sheffield singles champion partnered Jogenes Senorin (Middlesex) in the men’s doubles.

In the opening round they beat Lithuanian duo Virginijus Juknelis and Virgilijus Valiu,putting out Hundhausen and Schmidt of Germany in the second round and Poland’s Dobrowolski and Strzalka in the third.

In the last eight the English pairing lost to the eventual champions Georgii Rubinshtein and Aleksander Savelev 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5.

This weekend, Horsfield represents England Over 40s debut alongside Simon Pugh in an international team competition in Leipzig, Germany, where they will compete against teams from Denmark, Turkey, Germany and the Czech Republic.
