Sheffield-trained stars Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight will be hoping to make a home advantage count when they compete in one of the most prestigious table tennis championships in the sporting calendar.
The duo are set to take part in the ITTF Pro Tour English Open Table Tennis Championships, which are being held at the English Institute of Sport, from next Wednesday to Sunday.
The competition will feature players from over 50 countries, including World, Olympic, European, Asian and Commonwealth champions, all vying for the titles and a share in the $172,000 prize money.
Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford will be hoping to repeat his Commonwealth Games success last October while Kelly Sibley, Joanna Parker, Hannah Hicks, Daniel Reed, Gavin Evans and Chris Doran, who also train at the National Training Centre at the EIS, will also be competing.
The English Open has been dubbed the ‘Crown Jewel of elite table tennis events’ and was voted the best in the world by the players in the 2009 Open.
