Sheffield Steelers look like having to make a choice between two European centremen who are candidates for the last forward line spot in the line-up.

The club is in talks with the pair, both of whom have experience in north American ice hockey. A decision could be taken next week.

Meanwhile, Steelers will again host the biggest game in the British game, on Boxing Day, this coming season.

They will welcome Nottingham Panthers, hoping to exceed the 9,200 fans who packed into Sheffield Arena last December 26.

Steelers won that game 2-1, with Robert Dowd scoring the winner. In the return match, however, the following night, they lost 3-5.

The full 2016-17 fixture list could be declared next week.

n Sheffield Steeldogs have re-signed forward Andrew Hirst, who is second in all-time appearances for the iceSheffield club.

The Doncaster-born 23 year old started icing in Sheffield with the Rapiers in 2005. He said: “It feels like I’ve been here forever, I enjoy it and wouldn’t want to play anywhere else - it’s looking good for next season.”

“The positivity from last year is building again. It’s probably going to be the most free flowing team we ever had and in a league that’s the hardest it’s ever been. We are going to be an entertaining team to watch – a fast skating team and able to score plenty of goals.”
