Barnsley shot-stopper Luke Steele has bid an emotional farewell to the club after six years of loyal service.

Barnsley shot-stopper Luke Steele has bid an emotional farewell to the club after six years of loyal service.

But that will be little consolation for Reds fans with a worrying exodus of players from Oakwell.

Steele is one of a growing list of players to have jumped ship.

And yesterday Chris O’Grady, last season’s leading scorer, joined Brighton and Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

Club captain Martin Cranie and fellow defender Tom Kennedy did not travel with the squad to Italy for the club’s pre-season training trip to Italy.

Midfielders Stephen Dawson, Jacob Mellis and Jim O’Brien all rejected new deals at Oakwell, while Tomasz Cywka took so too long to decide over his contract renewal and the club withdrew the offer.

Reds manager Danny Wilson will have to work his magic to recruit new players ahead of the club’s opening League One game, at home to Crawley Town, on Saturday August9.

Meanwhile the Reds were yesterday beaten 2-1 by Al Ain, last season’s United Emirates Cup winners. Brad Abbott was on the scoresheet for the visitors.
