Sheffield United will face Yeovil in the play-off semi-final first leg on Friday, May 3.

All United’s attention now switches to the play-offs after they finished their regular season with a scoreless home draw against Preston.

AUTOMATIC promotion might have been an impossibility.

But Sheffield United’s management and first team squad alike had been at pains to remind that, from their perspective at least, this match still served a purpose.

Doyle, United’s captain, used his programme notes to describe it as an opportunity to inject some impetus ahead of next week’s League One play-off semi-final first leg.

Manager Chris Morgan’s media briefing on Thursday had contained the admission that places in the 11 that will start that contest are still up for grabs.

All eyes, of course, were on Ironside and McFadzean who have both been handed prominent roles under the new regime.

They acquitted themselves well.

Given the circumstances both clubs had found themselves in, it was no surprise to see the first-half become something of a slow-burn.

United were desperate to avoid injuries or suspensions. Preston, who introduced Foster for Wright at the start of the second. were simply playing out a desperately disappointing campaign.
