Blades boss gives Macca more time

KEVIN McDonald will be given until the last possible moment to prove his fitness for this weekend’s Steel City derby, Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson has confirmed.

The former Scotland under-21 international, whose performances have been a driving force behind Wilson’s campaign to rid the South Yorkshire club of its long ball image, is battling to overcome a hamstring injury sustained during the recent victory over Preston North End.

“Kevin hasn’t trained since then,” Wilson admitted. “He’s a doubt and that goes without saying but we’re not ruling Macca out completely and we’ve got contingencies.”

With United guaranteed to enter their match with third-placed Sheffield Wednesday second in the League One table, Wilson appeared relaxed about McDonald’s predicament during yesterday’s media briefing at Shirecliffe.

Nick Montgomery and Lee Williamson are both vying for a starting role should the midfielder fail to recover in time for Sunday’s visit to Hillsborough.
