Former Rotherham and Barnsley boss Robins had edged out Wilson as the new bookies favourite as the Telegraph went to press - with an announcement possible before the weekend.

I understand Robins met with United plc director Simon McCabe, son of chairman Kevin, at Old Trafford on Monday while attending the second leg of the FA Youth Cup final.

Rochdale manager Keith Hill was still a possible runner yesterday, having turned down Barnsley, while Peter Reid and Blades academy chief John Pemberton are others who have been considered.
