Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, accepts his team will face a huge test of character at Highbury this afternoon.

And, labelling today’s fixture as the most prestigious in Fleetwood Town’s Football League history, he warned it would be a grave mistake to underestimate the threat posed by Graham Alexander’s side.

Clough told The Star: “Is this their biggest league game? Quite possibly and that tells you the context it will be put in.

“Their crowd will be up for it and I am sure their players will as well. We have got to be ready for all that.

“We will remind our lads but we hope they will have already worked it out as well. We hope they have had enough experience of going to places where that is the case.

“That is one of the things with being in this club in League One. Whether it is home or away, every single game is like that for our opponents.

“If you play at Bramall Lane, it is probably the biggest crowd they’ll play in front of. When we go away, it is their biggest home game.”

Town gained promotion from the Conference three seasons ago while United, last term’s FA Cup semi-finalists, host Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup next week.

“Their home form has been the key to it all the way through,” Clough said. “It is one of those places which is a lovely little ground but a difficult place to go.

“I think we’d sell out our away allocation twice if we had the opportunity. It is one of those fixtures where when you come from where they have come from, Sheffield United is a huge game.

“They are there on merit and an exceptionally good team.”
