Danny: don’t blame Simmo

danny Wilson is looking for Sheffield United fans to give their support tonight to under-fire goalkeeper Steve Simonsen - if he gives him the nod later today.

The Blades boss says he will not make his decision until today but added; “If Simmo’s the man, then he’s the man.”

He went on: “I’m not going to criticise him because it’s tough enough being a goalkeeper as it is.

“It’s easy to blame one particular person for the equaliser we conceded at Orient but I’m not going to hang anyone out to dry.

“Someone makes a mistake in midfield and no one says anything - there were lots of things that led up that goal we did not deal with well enough in other areas,

“He’s an experienced goalkeeper and I’m sure he’s dealt with things throughout his career.

“Yes, things can always be a jolt to your confidence and I have to see how his confidence is.

“He seemed confident enough in training. We’ve shown faith in him before and if he is lacking confidence then I’d look at it. He knows he’s under the miscroscope but he’s got a strength of character.”

Wilson said he is still looking for another goalkeeper, the only deputy being inexperienced George Long.

“He is going to be a tremendous prospect. You can mollycoddle young players sometimes and they have to be thrown in sooner rather than later.”

Wilson called on Blades fans to provide positive support to whoever he selects. “Our fans get behind whoever is out there in red and white and that is a very important aspect. And it is a big game tonight against a side close by us in the table.”

Lee Williamson is out with a shin injury for two or three weeks with the hope that further examination doesn’t show a fracture. Chris Porter has also been under treatment and Ched Evans could return.
