sheffield United had an early kick-off at Yeovil and came away with victory despite losing Nick Montgomery with an injury.

Having tasted the high life on Merseyside in midweek, Sheffield United came back down to earth with a bump at Yeovil Town today.

Nearly 250 miles separate Goodison and Huish Park, where Danny Wilson’s players locked horns with Yeovil Town, but in sporting terms it could be two thousand.

United arrived at Town’s compact stadium having dropped just two points out of a possible 12.

The winner came from Porter from close range in the 41st minute and there was still time in the first half for Jean-Francois to get booked and Andrew Williams substituted following the South American’s challenge. Cresswell and Lowton had combined for Porter to force home his first goal since joining on a free transfer after leaving Derby.

But United’s celebrations were overshadowed by the sight of Montgomery being carried down the tunnel, face etched with pain, following a clash with Wotton just before the hour mark.

Town had started the second-half brightly with the excellent Collins stooping to clear O’Brien’s centre.

There was a long pause in play when Montgomery was stretchered from the pitch, clearly in some distress, after going down under a 55th minute challenge with McAllister the man to come on in his place.

Porter made way for Slew just after the hour.
