SHEFFIELD United winger Mark Yeates was last night holding talks with Watford after being granted permission to discuss a move to the Hertfordshire club.

Officials at Bramall Lane agreed an undisclosed fee with their Vicarage Road counterparts just hours before Danny Wilson’s side beat Worksop Town 1-0 in a friendly last night.

United’s decision to make Yeates available for transfer marks the latest phase in Wilson’s plan to reshape the squad he inherited from predecessor Micky Adams in May.

Should the former Middlesbrough and Tottenham Hotspur forward head south, he will become the second big name to depart United since their relegation from the Championship following Darius Henderson’s recent switch to Millwall.

Meanwhile, striker Jordan Slew, whose refusal to sign a new contract threatens to overshadow Danny Wilson’s rebuilding plans for the forthcoming League One campaign, has been urged to end the deadlock before his teammates travel to Malta tomorrow.

United, who played their latest pre-season friendly at Worksop Town last night, are scheduled to spent the next seven days in the

Mediterranean as preparations for the 2011/12 season begin in earnest.

Slew has been offered an improved two-year deal following protracted talks between the club’s hierarchy and his representative.

“The sooner this gets sorted out the better it is for everyone concerned,” said Wilson.

“We’ve put together an excellent package for Jordan and, as I’ve made clear, I feel it is is in his best interests to accept and continue his education here with us.”

United’s patience behind the scenes is starting to wear thin as they seek to convince one of the stars of their 2011 FA Youth Cup Final squad that his interests are best served by remaining in South Yorkshire.

Richard Cresswell, one of the most experienced players at Wilson’s disposal, has echoed the manager’s sentiments that it would be a mistake for Slew to push through a move at this early stage in his career.
