It’s been a tough couple of weeks at Sheffield United but the Blades are still well-placed to take up a play-off spot, even if ambitions were to finish in the top two.

Scunthorpe United provide the opposition this week, with Nigel Clough aiming to get his team back to winning ways before a couple of defeats turns into something more serious.

POSSIBLE TEAMS

Scunthorpe United: Daniels, Clarke, Canavan, Davey, Townsend, Evans, O’Neil, Bishop, Madden, van Veen, McSheffrey.

Sheffield United: Turner, Harris, McEveley, Brayford, Freeman, Doyle, Coutts, Murphy, Done, S Davies.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Gary McSheffrey, aged 32, has scored eight goals in 28 appearances for Scunthorpe this season. The Coventry born forward, who first appeared for his hometown club in 1999, has also represented Stockport County, Luton Town, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Chesterfield. McSheffrey joined Idrottsklubben Brage on loan soon after making his professional debut. McSheffrey has been capped by England at both under-18 and under-20 level.

HISTORY LESSON

Both of the fixtures which took place in League One - United prevailed on penalties after a JP Trophy tie ended goalless in 2013 - finished 1-1. The average number of goals scored when United have faced Scunthorpe away from home is 2.82. On only four occasions have more than three goals been scored whenever these these two clubs have met in north Lincolnshire.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE

Darren Handley: The Lancastrian based official, promoted from the Conference last term, has produced six red cards in 21 outings so far this season with four of those coming in his last 10 appointments. Handley dismissed Chesterfield’s Jack Broadhead when they were beaten 2-0 in a JP Trophy tie at Glanford Park in September. Only only one of those sendings-off has involved a player representing the home team.
