1989: Nigel Martyn became the first £1million goalkeeper when he moved from Bristol Rovers to Crystal Palace. He was sold to Leeds in the summer of 1996 for £2.25million and won international honours with England. He was forced to retire through injury in June 2006 while at Everton.
