Nigel Adkins has placed Sheffield United’s recruitment plans on hold to prevent negotiations with his leading targets from overshadowing the club’s preparations for games against Bury and Colchester, writes James Shield.

United are understood to have reached an agreement, albeit in principle, with Fulham which could see Dan Burn move to Bramall Lane during the emergency loan window before the recent transfer deadline.

But with deals at this stage of the season restricted to a maximum of 93 days, Adkins is expected to delay triggering the move until later this month.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home fixture with Bury, the United manager said: “There will be no new additions to the group over the course of the next two games. Then, people can ask me again after those. We won’t be doing anything before then.”

United slipped to fourth in the League One table after being forced to postpone last weekend’s match against Colchester due to international call-ups. The fixture has been rearranged for Tuesday with Stefan Scougall, Terry Kennedy and Ryan Flynn all hoping to feature after recovering from injury.

Midfielder Paul Coutts has yet to feature this season but, Adkins explained last night, has made significant progress in his battle to overcome a knee complaint.

“Paul Coutts has also been on the training ground which we are very pleased with,” he said. “He’s got a while to go before he’s considered, he needs a prolonged period training with the first team before that can happen and then some under-21 games.

“There are no expectations on him and the same goes for (John) Brayford, (Bob) Harris and (Matt) Done. With them, we’re looking at about October time to get them training with the first team.”
