SHEFFIELD United defender Neill Collins has insisted he could not wish to play for a bigger club after confirming talks aimed at extending his contract should be officially completed soon.

Collins, who is understood to have provisionally agreed terms following negotiations with Bramall Lane’s hierarchy, made the admission ahead of tonight’s League One fixture at Swindon Town.

“There are players in the Championship who would come here,” he said. “Irrespective of the division we are in at the moment.

“The potential here is absolutely huge. I’m genuinely happy. This is without doubt one of the most enjoyable periods of my career, and realistically speaking I don’t think there’s a bigger club I could go to.

“Everything (regarding a new deal) is progressing nicely and I’m hopeful of a positive resolution soon.”

Collins refused to divulge the length of the contract second-placed United have tabled and added: “I’m not going to make any grand statements about getting into the Premier League and all of that. Right now the only objective is getting out of this division. When we’ve done that we can start talking about all the other stuff.

“But, like I say, this is one of the happiest times of my career thanks to the club, the manager, his staff, the rest of the lads and the fans. Hopefully there are some really big games to come.”

Despite harbouring ambitions of representing Kilmarnock, the club he has supported since childhood, before retirement, Collins, aged 29, hinted he would still be happy to finish his career with Danny Wilson’s side.

United’s latest opponents are managed by former Sheffield Wednesday striker Paolo Di Canio and Collins said: “I remember watching Paolo play for Celtic at Killie. I was about 11 or 12 and a season-ticket-holder and I remember it vividly.

“Hats off to him for getting Swindon promoted (last season). Although he’s an emotional guy that’s probably his strength.”
