Sheffield United: Blades did not pay a penny to get shot of Brandy

Febian Brandy agreed to tear-up his contract before leaving Sheffield United, writes James Shield.

Brandy, who yesterday joined Rotherham following a chequered spell at Bramall Lane, could have sought to negotiate a severance package because he did not ask to leave Nigel Clough’s side.

But, after learning first team opportunities were likely to prove limited next term, the 25-year-old and his advisors waved their right to compensation following talks with United’s hierarchy.

Brandy returned to Walsall on loan in January, just seven months after electing not to accept their offer of a new deal.

Previously of Manchester United, Swansea City and Notts County, he made 15 appearances for United but failed to command a regular role after being sent-off against Shrewsbury Town in November.

Several other clubs are also thought to have expressed an interest in signing Brandy following Clough’s admission that he was destined to depart but Walsall, who saw their former captain Andy Butler recently move in the opposite direction, had been the favourites to secure his signature.

However, that situation changed when Brandy received an approach from the Championship.

United, meanwhile, have announced their Capital One Cup first round tie against Mansfield Town at Bramall Lane will take place on Wednesday 13 August. Ticket details for the match, which kicks-off at 7.45pm, are set to be confirmed in due course.

County are now scheduled to visit South Yorkshire on Friday 28 November (kick-off 7.45pm) after their trip to United was brought forward due to a clash with a Sheffield Wednesday game.

Another home fixture, this time against Doncaster Rovers, has also been altered after Clough requested more time to prepare following Easter Saturday’s clash at Barnsley.

Rovers now face United on Tuesday 7 April. (Kick-off 7.45pm).
