Sheffield United have submitted bids for at least three players, including MK Dons defender Kyle McFadzean, after agreeing a severance package with Dean Hammond.

The former Leicester City midfielder was placed on the transfer list following Chris Wilder’s appointment as manager after activating a clause entitling him to a 12 month contract at United.

Wilder, who took charge when Nigel Adkins was sacked in May, has reassured United’s hierarchy there will be no repeat of the recruitment sagas involving Hammond and Dan Burn which overshadowed long periods of his predecessor’s reign.

Talks with Martyn Woolford, another of Adkins’ signings Wilder has declared surplus to requirements, are also known to have taken place. The former Millwall winger, however, could yet be sold rather than paid-up.

“I’ll never comment on what has gone on before,” Wilder said. “But I will say what we are going to do and that is treat the owners’ money as if it is our own. It goes without saying that we want things done as quickly as possible but, for the sake of the football club, it’s also important we get things right.”

Although negotiators acting on behalf of Wilder remain adamant Dons are prepared to sell to a League One rival - despite Karl Robinson’s recent outburst - they have been instructed to pursue other targets if no significant headway is made. McFadzean, who started his career with United, informed Robinson he wants to return north and the relationship between the two men is thought to have become increasingly strained over the past fortnight.

With McFadzean attempting to force the issue, United are expected to try and make further contact later this week before convening a meeting to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, Bury have been deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, Callum Styles, against Southend on the final weekend of the League One season.

A Football League statement read: “The club has accepted that Styles was not registered in accordance with League regulations and the points deduction will be applied retrospectively to Bury’s 2015/16 season total. The final divisional table for League 1 will be adjusted with Bury dropping from 14th to 16th place.” United finished 11th, 19 points behind the automatic promotion places.
