Sheffield United have received an injury boost ahead of tomorrow’s game against Chesterfield, writes James Shield.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who has missed the opening two games of the new season with a hamstring complaint, returned to work at the Redtooth Academy yesterday while fears Jose Baxter suffered a potentially serious knee problem against Gillingham last weekend have also been allayed.

Nigel Adkins, the United manager, also confirmed Terry Kennedy and Craig Alcock are making progress in their respective fitness battles during his pre-match briefing.

“We have among injury list already, injuries from last season. It was good to see Craig Alcock and Terry Kennedy on the training ground this morning, as it was with Jose Baxter and Jamal Campbell-Ryce. “That’s beneficial and hopefully getting players closer to being back in the fold. The previous two games we have only had the starting eleven, the subs, and one extra from a fitness point of view.”

Baxter departed Priestfield, where United suffered a shock 4-0 defeat, on crutches after damaging a knee and was omitted from the squad which advanced into the Capital One Cup second round at Morecambe on Tuesday.

Another absentee, Ryan Flynn, is undergoing a personal pre-season programme with United’s medical staff but Harrison McGahey (pelvis), Paul Coutts (knee) and Matt Done (collarbone) have yet to follow suit.

Adkins, who bolstered his central defensive options by signing David Edgar from Birmingham City earlier this week, said:

“We have got several out, but so has everybody, and you will never hear me complain about that, it’s just reality

“Terry Kennedy has been out for a long time, Harrison McGahey is still out injured.”
