Julian Winter has outlined the qualities Sheffield United want their new manager to possess, writes James Shield.
Winter was speaking after being officially unveiled as chief executive of the club’s new football club board yesterday.
Confirming that Chris Morgan, appointed on an interim basis following Danny Wilson’s departure last month, will feature on “a short-list of about seven,” he said: “We need someone who supports a team that embraces young players and a player developer. Someone capable of improving players.
“We will be recruiting a certain type - hungry, athletic - so they must identify those. Focus on the best talent in the lower divisions.”
Winter, who together with director Scott McCabe and chairman David Green will oversee the interview process, confirmed United have received a “significant volume” of applications since Monday’s League One play-off defeat “of which around 20 are of quality.”
“The playing budget will be less this year,” Winter added. “We have had the biggest budget and the second biggest budget for the last two and not been promoted.”
