Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough has predicted Diego De Girolamo, the Italy youth international, will “benefit immensely” from his loan spell at York City, writes James Shield.

De Girolamo is expected to make his debut for the League Two club at Newport County this afternoon after joining Nigel Worthington’s side on a short-term loan.

Clough, who included De Girolamo in his starting eleven when United knocked Hartlepool out of the JP Trophy four days ago, said: “It’s experience. It was pretty plain to everyone the other night, when he started at Hartlepool, that would be a benefit to him.

“He needs the intensity of games that he can’t get with us at the moment. One under-21 game a week isn’t the same as playing Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday for York.

“He has gone for a month to get a couple of goals, games and to get sharper. Then he’ll come back and we’ll see where we are in a month’s time.

“He’s been very good at youth level. Now it’s a step up to League Two and the physical element will bring the most benefit to him.”

Clough, who made 11 changes at Victoria Park, also confirmed United have not been censured for contravening the JPT’s selection regulations at Victoria Park.

“We are aware of the rules but we are also aware it’s looked at on a case-by-case basis,” he said. “It’s not an automatic penalty and I’d hope, with the quality of the side we did put out, there won’t be any.

“If we wanted to get knocked out and treat it with disrespect, we would have taken the under-18’s and the under-21’s. We didn’t, we took the first-team squad and put the best side out that we had that night.”
