Sheffield United today quashed fears that John Brayford could be set for another long spell on the sidelines.

The former Cardiff City and Derby County defender, who suffered a serious knee injury at the end last season, had been scheduled to complete the first-half of Tuesday’s under-21 fixture against Sunderland after entering the final phase of his rehabilitation.

But, after withdrawing before half-time, Brayford underwent a series of tests to ascertain the extent of the problem.

Speaking at United’s training complex this afternoon, manager Nigel Adkins refused to divulge the full details of Brayford’s prognosis but said: “John Brayford got 30 minutes but had to come off with something that, hopefully, is not as bad as we first feared. He’s been out for a long time. He had a couple of weeks training and then the next progression was 45 minutes for the under-21’s but unfortunately he just felt something in his knee. We’ve had him assessed and, all being well, it’s not as bad as we first thought. You get that when people come back from a while out, look at Ryan Flynn. Those little niggles happen all the time.”

Adkins, who is also expected to be without David Edgar, Bob Harris, James Wallace and Florent Cuvelier for Saturday’s League One fixture against Rochdale, revealed United are exploring ways to ensure a lengthy injury list does not hamper the club as it seeks a return to the Championship.

“We are talking about players you would expect to be instrumental here,” Adkins added. “Players who are potentially starters. These are people we’d expect to be challenging.

“The players have been carrying too many injuries this season. Going forward, yes, there is something we can do about it. There were big demands on them last season though. But there’s still been too many unavailable.”
