Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, hopes his squad’s big-game experience proves crucial when the League One play-offs begin next week, writes James Shield.

United finish the regular season when fellow promotion hopefuls Chesterfield visit Bramall Lane tomorrow (kick-off 12.15pm).

And, after guiding them into the semi-finals of both major domestic cup competitions since taking charge last term, Clough said: “We have done well in those for about 18 months now. Going back to the FA Cup run last season when we had some big occasions. We are happy with how the players coped.

“It was handled well and we just hope that continues. But you never know in football what’s going to happen, from one game to the next.

“We will be doing everything we can to replicate the preparations for those games. I don’t think you can look back at any one of those cup games and say we were lucky.

“I’m not sure what it is. Whether the team is suited to playing opposition from higher divisions. We’ve just been inconsistent in the league.”
