Nigel Clough has predicted Sheffield United’s march into the semi-finals of the FA Cup could accelerate their bid to regain Championship status.

United, who enter Monday’s fixture at Preston North End searching for an 11th straight win, have banked £742,500 in prize money en route to next month’s Wembley showpiece against Yorkshire rivals Hull City.

Clough acknowledged the financial rewards of becoming the first third-tier team to reach the last four in 13 years ago will prove beneficial, but also insisted the implications in terms of prestige should not be overlooked.

“It’s definitely a great selling point,” Clough told The Star. “It just further emphasises what this club is capable of doing when things go well. If you were a player you’d think ‘I fancy being a part of that’.”

Clough admitted recent results have prompted him to reconsider his recruitment plans. “Because of what the lads have done, because of the way they’ve responded and the character and professionalism they’ve shown, we might not need as many (new faces) as we thought,” he said.
