DIEGO De Girolamo and Lecsinel Jean-Francois are recovering from surgery to repair ruptured cruciate ligaments, Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson confirmed last night.

De Girolamo, who sustained the injury representing Italy under-18’s, was operated on after being examined by a specialist earlier this week. Jean-Francois, the Haiti international, underwent a similar procedure when consultants became concerned by his failure to overcome a long-standing knee problem.

“You can’t help but feel for the two lads,” Wilson, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s League One fixture with Brentford, said. “First and foremost our priority is to give them all the support and help they need to come back not only as soon as they can but also as good as ever.

“Unfortunately, they’ll be out for quite some time. These things usually take around six months so we’re looking not only at this season but the start of next.

“But, like I say, our focus right now is to make sure they get the best possible treatment and care.”

De Girolamo, aged 17, suffered the blow during the Azzurrini’s friendly with Austria earlier this month. Jean-Francois has not featured for United since damaging a cartilage against Notts County in October.

The 26-year-old was making his comeback from another long-standing complaint at Meadow Lane.

“We’ve found out that Lecsy has got something pretty much the same (as Diego),” Wilson added. “Obviously he’s gutted as we all are but we’ll get him back on track.”
