Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, believes the burgeoning partnership between Che Adams and Billy Sharp could give his team a vital edge in the race for League One play-off qualification.

The duo have emerged as Adkins’ preferred attacking option following months of experimentation earlier this term and, despite not being an obvious pairing, enter tomorrow’s game against Barnsley searching for their 13th and 21st goals of the season respectively.

“The strikers look a massive threat,” he said. “They exchange those little one two’s and they penetrate too. They are both in form.”

With Marc McNulty scheduled to rejoin United this summer following a loan spell at Portsmouth, where he has scored 11 times in 31 outings, Adkins faces some tough but welcome selection over the coming months.

Although all three will be granted opportunities to stake claims for a starting role ahead of the 2016/17 campaign, Adkins recently admitted “possession” is ninth tenths of the law when it comes to securing a first team jersey.

Speaking after watching both Adams and Sharp score during Tuesday’s win at Shrewsbury, which moved United to within four points of sixth-placed Gillingham with three matches remaining, he said: “Nobody should get comfortable but obviously, if you are in there, then you can only lose it.”
