Sheffield United are continuing to monitor the fitness of Marcus Williams and Tony McMahon ahead of Friday’s game against Notts County, writes James Shield.

Having emerged from the opening five rounds of their summer schedule unscathed, the League One club saw two of its most experienced defenders succumb to injury during last weekend’s final round of friendlies.

Williams, aged 27, appeared in considerable discomfort after taking a blow to his back during the 2-2 draw with Atromitos four days ago while McMahon joined him on the casualty list when United completed their pre-season preparations 24 hours later at York City.

“Tony turned his ankle,” Weir confirmed. “We’ll see how he is when things settle down.”

Having emphasised the importance of attacking full-backs on numerous occasions since taking charge in June, Weir will be following the duo’s progress as the countdown to United’s opening fixture of the new campaign continues.

“All of us are looking forward to getting started now,” Weir said. “It will be good to get things underway.”
